New name, same services: FSC's name changes to better reflect mission

In order to eliminate confusion and better assist all Air Force members and their families, the Family Support Center's name has been changed to the Airman and Family Readiness Center.

Air Force leaders decided that including "family" in the center's name caused confusion among some single Airmen, who thought of the support center as a place just for those with families.

Air Mobility Command's announcement of the name change stated that with only "family" in the name, single Airmen without dependents reported being uncomfortable in approaching the center to take care of basic needs.

The name change is expected to make both single Airmen and those with dependents feel more comfortable when seeking assistance from the center.

According to Debi Hall, 436th Mission Support Squadron Airman and Family Readiness Center flight chief, there has been a concern about the definition of "family" in Family Support Center for many years. Although the "family" was meant to include all segments of the entire Air Force family - active duty, retirees, civilians and the individual families of all - there has been continued confusion among some single Airmen throughout the Air Force.

"Air Force leadership saw the opportunity for a name change that better describes our mission - supporting the Airman and his or her family through readiness," said Mrs. Hall.

Although it possesses a new name, the center will continue to provide the same services. The center is recognized as a one-stop location where Airmen - both single and those with families - can obtain reliable information and assistance on a wide range of topics from transition, relocation, employment and deployment-related assistance to the Air Force Aid Society and loan closet.

The A&FRC is located in Building 263 and is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. For more information, call the center at 677-6930.
