5/1/2012 - DOVER AIR FORCE BASE, Del. -- One of the most successful intramural volleyball teams this season is the 436th Aerial Port Squadron A team.

They continued that success Monday by sweeping their rival 436th APS B 25-13 and 25-14 at the Dover Air Force Base, Del., Fitness Center.

James McDonald, Patrick Piazza and Jon Elliott led the way for the 436th APS A team, providing solid hitting, serving and setting to move the 436th APS to 7-1 on the season.
"We're just trying to relax and have fun," 436th APS A team player-coach Michael Pfefferkorn said. "We have a lot of talent and we continue to get better as the season goes along. We're trying to make that final long push to the playoffs."

The 436th APS A team used the solid hitting of McDonald and strong serving and setting of Elliott to pull out a close victory in Game 1. In Game 2, McDonald served seven consecutive points, including four service aces, and Piazza slammed home five kills to give the 436th APS A team a blowout victory.

Elliott said the timing and communication between hitters and himself is one of the reasons for their team's success.

"The foundation is that first pass," Elliott said. "A good pass leads to a good set, and a good set leads to a solid hit. Just being consistent with that is key. Those are the fundamentals that we've been working on all season. The abilities of our hitters are so good that even if I get a bad set they are still able to get a good hit."

For the 436th APS B team, a long season keeps getting longer. 436th APS B player-coach Johnathan Anderson said it all starts with good serving, and his team lacked that against the 436th APS A team.

"You've got to get your serves over the net," Anderson said. "You can't score unless the ball goes over the net. We need to get better with our serves."

Anderson said despite the loss it's always fun to play their rival.

"It was a nice match, it's always fun playing against our leadership," Anderson said. "They are a good team. They have good communication. That is something we lack."

Pfefferkorn said his team can still improve before the playoffs begin.

"We can work on our timing and making sure our defense gets in the right place," Pfefferkorn said. "We have no real time to practice, so we continue to tweak and to improve during the games."
