Take a three-mile walk with the 436th Aerospace Medicine Squadron Health and Wellness Center every Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Family Camp for the HAWC Walk.

The HAWC Walk is a way for Team Dover members to get together to exercise during lunchtime starting now until October.

"The HAWC Walk brings people together and is a great way to break up the day, ease stress and have fun," said Kate Jennings, 436th AMDS HAWC registered dietitian and nutrition program manager.

The HAWC Walk is not limited only to walking, runners are welcomed as well. Participation in this event entitles members to a free water bottle and the use of a pedometer to track progress.

"We had received many calls asking when the HAWC Walk would start again for the year. We did not realize how popular this event had become so we have brought this event back to the Dover Air Force Base community," said Ms. Jennings. "Anywhere from 10-30 walkers usually participate if weather permits, and it takes a little less than an hour to complete."

Department of Defense ID card holders are allowed to participate and children, if accompanied by an adult, are welcome.

"The HAWC Walk is an avenue by which the Dover community can come together
and support one another in getting healthy," said John Walters, 436th AMDS HAWC fitness program manager. "We motivate walkers by giving a pedometer once they walk 100,000 steps - you would not believe how many people strive to hit that goal."

The HAWC will send emails to registered participants in the event of inclement weather or if the HAWC Walk is canceled.

"The HAWC Walk affords participants the chance to get out and meet new friends and stay in touch with old ones, all while providing an excellent workout," said Nancy Zabaga, 436th AMDS HAWC Health Education Program Manager. "When participants cross the finish line, it's obvious they feel good knowing they have done something to benefit their health. All people have to bring is comfortable clothing, good walking shoes, and a smile."

Participants are encouraged to call the HAWC at 677-3733 to register, but walkers may also sign up upon arrival.
