Members of the 436th Airlift Wing have a very close relationship with their community partners in the city of Dover, Delaware. A lot of that is thanks to the history of local Dover government officials promoting the Air Force base to its citizens. A recent program created by the Mayor of the City of Dover, Robin Christiansen, continues to foster the bond with Team Dover.

“Mayor for a Minute” is a program that takes local leaders from the community and allows them to act as Mayor of Dover while also getting time to voice any changes they would like to see for the city. Col. Randy Boswell, 436th Mission Support Group commander, was
selected by the 436th AW to represent Dover Air Force Base.

“The Mayor for a Minute program was a wonderful opportunity extended to us by Mayor Christiansen. This was my first visit to City Hall, and I greatly appreciated seeing the rich history of Downtown Dover,” said Boswell. “I also appreciated the time with Mayor Christiansen. He is an expert on firefighting apparatus, an outstanding historian, a man of faith, and a perfect example of a leader who manages by walking around.”

A wide variety of individuals have participated in the program from all age groups and areas of Dover. While the event only lasts a few minutes, it allows Mayor Christiansen to receive different perspectives from representatives within the community.

“Col. Boswell fit the bill as Mayor for a Minute. He was an able leader and the city was still moving forward after his tenure” said Christiansen. “I think he may have a future in public service after he hangs up his Air Force career.”

Both the city of Dover and the 436th AW participate together in various events throughout the year. This program is just another example of how the city and the base have grown together to become Team Dover.

“Dover AFB and the city of Dover have a very strong relationship,” said Boswell. “As Mayor Christiansen often states, ‘Dover AFB is Dover and Dover is Dover AFB.’ My family and I feel like we are part of the community, and for this we are thankful for the city and this awesome assignment.”
