The environment; it is the area in which we all live, breathe and transform our dreams into realities. So the question that looms over our heads is what can we do to protect it?

The answer lies within the Environmental Management System. This system was created at the turn of the century through Executive Orders with the mission of protecting and enhancing our surroundings. EMS ensures compliance with all environmental laws, regulations, and reduces risks to the mission and people.

The Dover Air Force Base, Del., Environmental Management System covers all environmental concerns, but is currently focusing on five significant aspects: energy conservation, solid waste reduction, hazardous waste reduction, hazardous material control, and air emissions.

Every person that enters the base affects one of those five aspects in some fashion.

"Whether it is as simple as turning on a light or managing hazardous waste disposal, every action leaves a footprint," said Steve Seip, Environmental Quality Element Chief.

EMS creates a venue for all to assist in protecting our planet. If you would like to learn ways to help the environment, contact the 436th Civil Engineer Squadron's environmental element.

EMS reflects Dover's views and requirements. Unit Environmental Coordinators are appointed as experts for their respective group to convey concerns in support of the Wing's EMS Cross Functional Team.

The EMS Cross Functional Team is composed of all units and tenants on DAFB and is the governing authority on how to best manage and sustain environmental factors. If any questions regarding sustainability or other environmental topics exist, please contact your Unit Environmental Coordinator or a member of the 436th CES environmental element.

"When the amount of trash is reduced, the amount of waste disposed at the landfill is also reduced. Everyone can contribute to this effort and even the smallest contribution can make a big difference when everyone participates," said Pat Keffer, 436th CES EMS Coordinator.

We are all players in ensuring the vitality and security of our environment. Fully implementing the Dover AFB Environmental Management System is only the first step.
