Beginning in January, the 436th Civil Engineering Squadron Pest Management Shop is implementing a self-help pest and weed control program for all nonprivatized facilities here on base.

The self-help program grants all facility managers the responsibility to treat common pest and weed problems in and around their facilities.

While many pest problems can be avoided through good housekeeping, proper food storage and good sanitation practices, others may require low dose pesticides or other control items. The self-help program will give facility managers access to specialized items needed to combat common pest and weed problems.

Facility managers will now be responsible for controlling common pest such as: centipedes, crickets, earwigs, flies, non-venomous spiders, silverfish, mice, cockroaches, ants and other miscellaneous insects. Certified 436 CES Pest Management Technicians remain responsible for non-common pests including: wood destroying insects, bees, wasps, yellow jackets, bed bugs and venomous spiders such as black widows and brown recluses. Technicians will create a specific treatment plan for each situation; however, if a particular problem persists for more than 30 days the technicians will reassess the situation and change the treatment plan or begin a professional treatment regimen.

The pest management self-help store is located in building 921 and the hours are 7-11 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday for item pickup and treatment advice.

Facility managers need to contact 436 CES customer service at 677-4793 to ensure an up-to-date facility manager letter is on file.
