Downrange: Our Airman's perspective Published Feb. 2, 2010 By Airman 1st Class Shen-Chia Chu 436th AW Public Affairs DOVER AIR FORCE BASE, Del. -- Rank/Name: Airman First Class Brittany E. Lantry Unit: 436th Force Support Squadron Deployed Unit/Location: Currently deployed to the 732nd Expeditionary Support Squadron Describe your job at your deployed location: Our casualty liaison team is responsible for tracking battle injuries of injured Soldiers and DoD civilians. We also assist in identifying a patient's assigned unit and gathering additional demographics. Our mission is to record, report, verify and process casualty information without delay in order to notify appropriate agencies and organizations and the servicemember's next of kin. What was one of the most memorable experiences? After arriving on our third day at our deployed location, seven Iraqi civilians (two of which were children) were brought to the hospital after being severely-injured due to a suicide bomber. They all survived. I was amazed by how everyone from the hospital came together and helped. They even had people donating blood on the spot to help save their lives. It was like something you would see on TV. Working with the Army and with medical technicians has been a real eye-opener for me. I'm able to see and experience so much here, and I'm thankful for this because I know I won't have another opportunity to. How did your job at Dover prepare you or relate to your deployed duties? I was a member of the 436th Force Support Squadron Casualty Team during a base exercise. This experience gave me insight on what to expect as a Casualty Liaison Team member at a deployed location. Also, I received hands-on-training one month prior to my deployment with the Army at Ft. Jackson, S.C.
