Picture Restrictions

Question: I'm a retiree that was stationed at Dover from May 2002 through December 2006. There is a spot behind the Outdoor Recreation facility where I used to watch the aircraft and take pictures. When I visited this time, a security forces member told me I couldn't take pictures of a restricted area. I think that is ridiculous. I could go right outside the fence and get the same picture, or I could take the same picture over at the Museum through the fence or over the fence depending where the plane is. Why am I not allowed to take a picture outside the flightline area?

Answer: Many things have changed since we began waging the Global War on Terror. Unfortunately for the many legitimate friends of Dover Air Force Base, one of those changes includes stricter limits on activities that could represent potential unauthorized intelligence gathering. Photography or video of any restricted area or entry control point security measures is not authorized unless expressly approved by the Installation Public Affairs office in accordance with AFI 35-11, 17.2.4. The Defender was acting within the scope of his responsibilities and was dutifully keeping our base personnel and assets safe. Please be aware that taking pictures from outside the fence line is also policed by local officials with the aid of our Eagle Eyes program and our Security Forces presence. I am sorry for the inconvenience and hope you understand our concerns. Should you be interested in a photograph of our beautiful Dover tail flash, the AMC museum provides a great opportunity to get up close and personal.
