2014 Labor Day Tips Published Aug. 25, 2014 By Senior Airman Jared Duhon 436th Airlift Wing Public Affairs DOVER AIR FORCE BASE, Del. -- Whether you plan to visit the local zoo to see anacondas and lions or plan to travel further from the local area, the four-day Labor Day weekend approaches, and Team Dover personnel should keep some safety tips in mind to ensure it is a safe one. The Dover Air Force Base Safety office shared the following tips to help everybody enjoy the long weekend safely. While driving, remember no one is immune from mishaps. The Automobiles Association of America estimated 34.1 million Americans traveled during the 2013 holiday weekend. · Drive Defensibly - Other drivers on the road may not be as safe as you are. · Leave yourself maneuvering room at intersections · Plan "Escape" routes while driving · Watch out for mopeds and motorcycles · Do not pick up hitchhikers Whether swimming at the pool, camping or having an old-fashion cookout below are additional tips to help keep you safe. Swimming - · Swim with a buddy · Know your swimming ability · Check the water before diving in Camping - · Camp in approved areas · Use caution when starting fires · Thoroughly check camping equipment Cooking Outdoors - · Use lighter fluid, not gas · Move away from house and overhangs · Always monitor grill · Let coals cool before disposal Whatever you choose to do, remember to be aware of your surroundings, the people around you and practice good situational awareness.
