Super Smile Published Feb. 6, 2014 By 436th Dental Squadron DOVER AIR FORCE BASE, Del. -- Have you ever asked yourself: When should I take my child to the dentist? How frequently should my child be brushing? Is my child at risk for tooth decay (caries)? These are all normal parenting questions, and if you are having difficulty finding answers; please ask your local dentist. Unfortunately dental caries/tooth decay is the most prevalent chronic infectious disease afflicting children in the U.S. Left undetected and untreated, the disease called Early Childhood Caries can cause the early loss of baby (primary) teeth. The early loss of primary teeth can make it difficult to form words and speak clearly, and may persist until the permanent front teeth are in place; around seven to nine years of age. Indeed, a child's self-image can be affected if primary teeth are broken, decayed or missing. The American Dental Association urges parents to consult with their dentist when the first teeth start erupting. It is considered advantageous that the child's first visit occur within six months of eruption or no later than 12 months of age. This helps parents receive oral health education based on the child's developmental needs in addition it helps the child establish his/her "Dental Home." February is National Children's Dental Health Month (NCDHM), and this year's campaign features the slogan "Join the Super Smile Team!" In celebration of NCDHM, the 436th Dental Squadron has put together many fun filled activities; to include visits to: The Child Development Center (CDC), Welch Elementary School, Dover AFB Youth Center, and The Dover AFB Library. There will be activity booths, educational papers, and an "Award Winning" dental skit featuring members from our very own clinic. Members of the 436th Dental Squadron will also be talking with parents, children, teachers, and educators about the prevention of early childhood caries (cavities); or what we call "Preventive Dentistry." Inspired by the motto "2MIN2X" brushing two minutes twice a day will surely help anyone, young or old to, "Join the Super Smile Team!" We hope to see you there!
