Training parents with ‘STOMP’ Published Oct. 15, 2013 By Senior Airman Jared Duhon 436th Airlift Wing Public Affairs DOVER AIR FORCE BASE, Del. -- A free Specialized Training of Military Parents workshop for parents with special needs children is scheduled for October 23-24 at Chapel 2, here. STOMP, founded in 1985, is a Parent Information Center funded by the federal government to provide support and assistance to military families with children having special education or health needs. Dover AFB was selected to receive STOMP through a grant opportunity from the Air Force. The training will provide current and specific information about laws, regulations and resources related to special education and disabilities. It will help families build community resources and support, while also helping to raise awareness of the issues and challenges faced by military families with special needs children. "I believe that this training will be very informative for the participants," said Sonya Dyer, 436th Force Support Squadron Youth Center school liaison officer, "Parents with special needs children will receive the biggest benefit, but the event is open to all parents, and the effectiveness is already proven by how long the organization has been around and doing this." A team of two trainers from STOMP, parents of children with special needs who have experience with the military lifestyle, will be presenting the workshops. Date: 23 and 24 October Time: 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Location: Chapel 2 in base housing Note: Reservation is required to attend this class For reservations or more information, contact Sonya Dyer at sonya.dyer.1@us.af.mil or 302-677-6376
