OSS beats APS-B, 56-37

DOVER AIR FORCE BASE, Del. --  The 436th Operations Support Squadron beat the 436th Aerial Port Squadron B-Team 56 - 37 during an intramural basketball game April 10 at the Fitness Center.

"We won because we came together as a team," said Maurice Pitts, 436th OSS coach. "Joel Sines carried us on his back and took us to a win."

Sines scored the most points for the team, mostly dominating the board with 19 points with his lay-ups.

"The Porters played tough, they put a good effort forward - never giving up," said Pitts.

Though OSS won, Pitts said both teams are fighting for a spot in the play-offs.

"We will try to win by any means necessary," he said.

The Porters currently have a 10 - 5 record even after the loss to OSS, which has a 10 - 6 record.

"We have a solid team put together to represent our squadron," said Kevin Schmehl, APS (B) coach. "It really helps to have a mix of both athleticism and fundamental ball players."

The competition was fierce as two Porters had minor injuries, but both teams stayed close with the point spread and knocked one another to the floor as they fought for the ball on their hands and knees.

By the end of the first half, OSS scored 23 points, leading by two points.

"Our goal is to use a 2-3 zone defense to conserve energy on the defensive end and be more effective and aggressive on the offensive end," said Schmehl. "If they start making some shots, then we will switch up to a man-to-man defense."

However, OSS played strong in the second half as well and kept the Porters away from the board.

Through assists, bounce passes and well-played team efforts, Shon George, 436th APS (B), scored three 3-pointers and an overall 23 points for the team.

"George was a great player, shooting majority of the points for the team," said Pitts.
But Pitts, 436th OSS, fought back with 12 two-pointers during the second-half of the game and OSS dominated with dribbling skills.
