Increased security has become the "new norm" for U.S. Military installations, including Dover AFB.

On May 8, 2015, Adm. William Gortney, U.S. Northern Command commander, elevated the Force Protection Condition (FPCON) from Alpha to Bravo, as a result of the ongoing international and domestic threat environment. As of late July 2015, U.S. military installations within North America are expected to remain at FPCON Bravo.

Michael Mendoza, 436th Security Forces Squadron wing antiterrorism program manager, says that the Wing's Antiterrorism and Force Protection team have taken several actions to strengthen Team Dover's security posture in FPCON Bravo.

These actions include additional Random Antiterrorism Measures; increased ID checks, visitor screening and vehicle inspections. Security Forces has also increased patrols and are active around key population centers, such as, schools, housing areas and the medical clinic.

"This elevated level means more comprehensive checking of those entering the installation and base facilities, heightened awareness of employees and family members and additional guard forces," Mendoza said.

Dover AFB has also partnered with off-base agencies and community mission partners to increase the base's security posture. These include local, state and Federal law enforcement agencies.

"Currently, there is no specific information or threats indicating international or domestic terrorist groups are planning an attack on Dover AFB, Delaware," said Mendoza. "However, as the shooting in Chattanooga, Tennessee illustrates, homegrown violent extremist attacks can occur with little or no warning."

For the everyday person, officials advise that you increase your security vigilance and reduce your social media profile and be on the lookout for suspicious activities; such as, unauthorized photography, people who do not seem to belong in the workplace or neighborhood, people asking questions about security, base policies, or mission operations. In addition, be cognizant of and check unexpected packages or parcels delivered to your home.

"Your situational awareness and reporting plays a vital role in helping protect Dover Air Force Base, our community and the U.S. homeland," Mendoza said.

Be aware, be alert and report any suspicious activity immediately to the Security Forces 24-hour Control Center at 677-6666 or if it is off-base to the Delaware State Police Terrorism Tip Line 1-800-FORCE-12.
