Is one drink worth your career? Published Dec. 19, 2017 By Senior Airman Chelica Thompson 436th Airlift Wing Legal Office DOVER AIR FORCE BASE, Del. -- One drink. Just having one drink and deciding to get behind the wheel of a vehicle has serious consequences. Unfortunately, this has become an increasing issue for our Airmen here on Dover Air Force Base. In the state of Delaware, a driver is considered legally impaired when their blood alcohol content (BAC) is .08 percent or above. Even if your BAC is below the .08 threshold, you can still be charged with a DUI if you appear to be impaired enough to pose a threat to others. For those under the age of 21, if you drink and drive, you may be charged under the Delaware DUI statute if your BAC is .02 percent or above. The cost of a DUI does not only affect you financially, but personally and professionally as well. In a civilian court, for a first time offense, you could receive up to six months in jail, face fines and penalties totaling $500 to $1,500, (not including attorney fees) and have your license suspended for 12 to 24 months. As a member of the military, you also face potential Uniform Code of Military Justice or administrative actions imposed by your commander. The outcome of these actions could result in loss of rank, forfeitures, extra duty, restriction to base, and even confinement.Don’t risk the consequences of a DUI because “you think” you’re okay to drive. There are so many other resources available. Dover Airmen Against Drunk Driving (677-6000) is an option if you have a DOD ID, and it’s free! If not, phone a friend, a taxi, or an Uber. Be responsible and use common sense; asking for help could save your career.
