Comm unplugs LRS in basketball showdown Published Jan. 17, 2012 By Tech. Sgt. Chuck Walker 436th Airlift Wing Public Affairs DOVER AIR FORCE BASE, Del. -- The 436th Communications Squadron basketball team hopes to build on its playoff berth a year ago with a deeper run in the playoffs this year. Those hopes were boosted with the result of its game against the 436th Logistics Readiness Squadron at the base fitness center Jan. 12 at Dover Air Force Base, Del. Comm player-coach Hunter Myers scored a game-high 22 points as Comm blew out 436th LRS 47-32. "We started out strong and they were really never able to recover after that," Myers said. "We also played solid defense. That is two things that we always try to do, play defense and play hard." After 436th LRS jumped out to a 5-0 lead, Comm took the game over. Comm went on a 17-2 run to take a 17-7 lead that it never relinquished. 436th LRS did go on an 8-2 run to start the second half to cut Comm's lead down to six points at 30-24. But any hopes of a comeback were quickly dashed as Comm went on a 12-2 run of its own, with Myers accounting for six of those points, to put the game on ice. For the 436th LRS (0-2) the game was a learning experience as it is fielding an almost completely new squad from last season. 436th LRS player-coach Patrick Shaffer said he hopes his club continues to improve as the season goes on and gets one of the final playoff spots. Issai Arias led 436th LRS scoring nine points. "We were taking one pass and getting one shot," said Shaffer . "We have some guys that have never played with each other. We hope to finish the season at .500 and get the fourth spot in the playoffs. We just have to work on moving the ball around and not having as many turnovers." Comm (1-1) is off to an impressive start in its first two games, losing to defending base champions 436th Security Forces Squadron by only three points and its victory against 436th LRS. Myers said that he hopes his team will compete with the top teams; the 436th Civil Engineer Squadron, the 436th Force Support Squadron and 436th SFS; in the playoffs at the end of the season. "We're trying to have fun, but also be competitive," Myers said. "This win feels good, we just hope to put a string of wins together and keep improving."
