436th Med Group is flag-football champion Published Dec. 6, 2011 By Tech. Sgt. Chuck Walker 436th Airlift Wing Public Affairs DOVER AIR FORCE BASE, Del. -- The 436th Medical Group flag-football team took the hard route in bringing home the title. Playing out of the loser's bracket, the 436th MDG had to defeat the 436th Civil Engineer Squadron twice in order to win the base championship. The 436th MDG defeated the 436th CES A team 34-27 and 25-18 to win the base championship Dec. 1 at Dover Air Force Base, Del. 436th MDG quarterback-coach Ian Money talked about the resilience his team displayed in winning back-to-back games. "Winning two games in a row is very difficult," said Money. "With a team of that caliber, we really had to pull together to be able to pull two wins out. I'm proud of our team." In game one, the 436th CES scored in just two plays to take an early 7-0 lead. After both teams traded interceptions, the 436th CES converted their interception into a touchdown drive to push their lead to 14-6. Late in the second half with the 436th CES leading 27-26, the 436th MDG marched down the field and scored and converted a two-point conversion with little over a minute left and held on for the 34-27 victory. In game two, the 436th MDG took the momentum it earned by winning game one and never looked back. The 436th MDG took an early 6-0 lead and never trailed as it took home the championship defeating the 436th CES 25-18. Money said his team was able to tough it out in spite of the trouble they found themselves in. "We were hungry, we were down, but we did not fall apart," Money said. "We were able to pull ourselves together and calm ourselves when plays happened. We did not want to come out with anything less than the championship." For the 436th CES it was a bitter pill to swallow after entering the base championship from the winner's bracket and needing only one win to be base champions. "We could not play defense and we could not stop them," 436th CES quarterback-coach Steven Peaper said. "They were hitting dump offs to their linemen and we just could not stop them. We were playing man-to-man coverage and they were able to break us down to create plenty of space to run." Peaper said his team played well to reach the finals despite the loss. "We had a really good season," Peaper said. "It is really upsetting to lose two games in a row and losing both games by one touchdown makes it even harder."
