'Operation Goblin' gearing up for Halloween Published Oct. 20, 2009 By Master Sgt. Pamela Mosley 436th Security Forces Squadron DOVER AIR FORCE BASE, Del. -- The 436th Security Forces Squadron will be conducting 'Operation Goblin' from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 31 in the Eagle Heights Housing Area. This operation will include Security Forces members and augmentees conducting foot patrols throughout both housing areas, as well as McGruff the Crime Dog making an appearance. In addition to these events the 436th Aerial Port Squadron will x-ray candy from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. at the Passenger Terminal, Bulding 150. The trick or treat night will be closed to non-DOD ID card holders. The 436th SFS also offers the following tips for a safe Halloween: Make sure costumes are made of fire-resistant material. They should be large enough to allow clothes to be worn underneath to protect children from the cold. Use bright colors and reflective tapes to alert motorists. Adults and children should carry flashlights. Parents or guardians should supervise their children or encourage the buddy system and know where their children are and who they are with. People should stay in their own neighborhood or familiar areas. Provide a well-lit area for children to walk and be sure to walk on sidewalks. If there are no sidewalks available, children should walk on the left side of the road facing traffic and cross streets at crosswalks or intersections. Follow a designated route. If parents or guardians are not with their children they should set a time for the children's return. Stay away from dark houses. Give candy that has been commercially wrapped. Do not give fruit, homemade candy, or unwrapped candy. Parents and guardians should instruct their children to leave all candy and treats intact until they inspect them. Discard any unwrapped or tampered candy (contain small pinholes, have torn wrappers or does not appear normal). Anyone traveling Halloween night should be alert for children and turn on their lights and slow down in residential areas. It is recommended that they drive at least five miles per hour below the posted speed limit. When traveling to parties, motorists should not wear their costume mask while driving. Do not leave the house unattended. Put away and lock-up outside items (bicycles, lawn mowers, patio furniture, etc.). Lock windows and doors and keep the house well lit. Listen and watch for signs of vandalism and report it to Security Forces CRIME STOP LINE, 677-2100.
