After 11 months of construction, the ribbon was officially cut on the Army and Air Force Exchange Service Southside Service Station Aug. 24.

The old service station had been completely demolished and replaced with a new, larger facility that better suited the needs of Dover Air Force Base.

"We're really happy to be able to provide this service for the community," said Jose Mendez, Fort George G. Meade AAFES general manager.

The new service station features a new floor design, a fully automatic car wash and eight gasoline pumps and two Diesel pumps with 24 hour access.

"AAFES didn't want to take the service station away, we didn't want to be without it, but it was well worth the wait," said Col. Manson Morris, 436th Airlift Wing commander.

While the main construction is complete, improvements are still on the way for the service station including an ATM and two food establishments, Subway and Tim Hortons.
