This week in History: Aug. 9 - 15 Published Aug. 18, 2009 By John Murphy 436th AW historian DOVER AIR FORCE BASE, Del. -- August 10, 1963: First Lieutenant David M. Carlin, 39th Air Transport Squadron on Dover Air Force Base, completed certification requirements as a C-133 Cargomaster aircraft commander. At age 23, Carling became one of the youngest C-133 commanders in the Military Air Transport Service. August 10, 1967: The 1042d Test Squadron activated on Dover Air force Base. The arrival of three CH-3C Jolly Green Giant helicopters enabled the unit to assist with normal base support missions. These mission included air evacuation, search and rescue and the transportation of very important persons. This tenant unit reported to the USAF Headquarters Command. August 9, 1976: In an effort to avoid the damaging winds of approaching Hurricane Belle, 24 C-5 Galaxy aircraft evacuated Dover, bound for Whiteman Air Force Base, Mo. The evacuation process lasted less than nine hours. All the aircraft began returning the following day. This marked the first time that Dover's ramp held no aircraft.
