This Week in History: July 13 - 17 Published July 20, 2009 By John Murphy 436th AW historian DOVER AIR FORCE BASE, Del. -- July 15, 1895: The U.S. Army established the Post Exchange system. This system evolved into the U.S. Army Exchange Service in 1941 and then into the Army Air Force Exchange Service in 1950. July 13, 1967: The Airlifter began printing a new weekly feature. The 'Word from the Wing' article began running on the front page of the base newspaper in order to keep Airmen informed about Dover Air Force Base operational happenings. The feature included flying hour data, reliability rates and other items of mission interest. July 15, 1967: Dover Air Force Base opened an Airmen's Club exclusively for use of those in the rank of E-4 and below. Officials from the Non-Commissioned Officers Club held responsibility for its operation.
