Dover Air Force Base was recently honored during the 2008 US Air Force Safety Awards.

The 436th Airlift Wing received plaques for both Explosives Category I Safety and Ground Safety. The Dover Aero Club also received the Aero Club Certificate.

"The Team Dover Safety office always strives to provide the best advice and training possible to keep our fellow Airman safe at work, home or play," said Lt. Col. Lee Landis, 436th Airlift Wing chief of safety.

The Explosives Safety Plaque is awarded to organizations with outstanding achievement in, or contributing to, explosives safety.

"Dover is the number one mover of hazardous cargo," said Colonel Landis. "We expedited the safe movement of over 9.3 million pounds of munitions with zero mishaps."

The Ground Safety Plaque was awarded based on Dover programs such as motorcycle safety, which has recently seen an 88 percent reduction in mishap costs.

The Aero Club Safety Certificate is used to promote aviation safety and award Air Force Aero Clubs for flight safety achievement. The Dover AFB Aero Club had 1,000 hours of mishap-free flying in 2008.

"These Air Force-level awards provide credence for efforts of many on the base," said Colonel Landis. "The awards are a tribute to the teamwork displayed by commanders, first sergeants, unit safety reps, supervisors, and the wing safety staff."
