Put on your running shoes: Dover hosts 1st Annual half marathon Published March 12, 2009 By Airman 1st Class Shen-Chia Chu 436th AW Public Affairs DOVER AIR FORCE BASE, Del. -- The 436th Force Support Squadron Fitness Center is hosting a half marathon and 3.1 mile race on Perimeter Road April 4 and the first-ever duathlon March 28 for all DoD ID card holders. The half marathon is approximately 13 miles and the duathlon will consist of a 5K-run, 14-mile bike-rides, and ends with a 5K run. "These are our first-time events here at Dover and it will be outstanding," said Mindy Rolkowski, 436th FSS Fitness Center director. "The purpose behind these events is to help prepare runners for the upcoming Air Force Marathon in September." This is a great way to get people interested in the upcoming running season for the Spring, in addition to preparing for the marathon, said John Murray, 436th FSS fitness program manager and coordinator of the events. Signing up for a long-distance race for the first time may seem like risky business and Mr. Murray suggests Airmen considering the challenge should prepare for the run. "Make sure you train to the appropriate level when preparing for the half marathon because you are at risk for injury," said Mr. Murray. "Pace yourself so you don't over do it to surpass your personal physical limitations." Airman 1st Class Adam Brock, 436th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, said he wanted to run the half marathon, but he is taking Mr. Murray's advice for this race. "I wish I could run the half marathon, but I know I'm not prepared," said Airman Brock. "That's why I chose to run the 5K instead. It will help to keep me in shape." Participants must register and pay a fee for the half marathon and 5K by March 15. The Fitness Center will accept late registration up until the final deadline April 4 at 7:30 a.m. The duathlon is a free event and participants must register by March 21.
