Traffic safety has been the focus of the first-ever, joint-service Fall Safety Campaign, which kicked off Sept. 2 and ends Nov. 30.

Over the last three years, the Air Force has lost 41 people during the Sept.-Nov. timeframe, a 29 percent higher rate than during the 101 Critical Days of Summer.

The finale of the Fall Safety Campaign encompasses Thanksgiving, which includes an increase in family trips that may involve driving long distances. Ensure you and all family members are properly buckled up. Seat belts are your best defense to minimizing injuries and preventing fatalities.

If driving a long distance, be properly rested before traveling. Fatigue and driving are a deadly combination. Prepare your vehicles for winter and always ensure you have good tires on your vehicle. Proper tire tread is critical to prevent hydroplaning and sliding on slick surfaces. Anyone riding a motorcycle should always wear their protective equipment.

Another safety area to watch for at the end of November is cooking the Thanksgiving meal.

When cooking, remember to keep children out of the kitchen area, keep the handles of pots and pans facing inward and never leave cooking food unattended.

Deep frying the Thanksgiving turkey has increased in popularity in recent years, and can be a safety hazard. This should always be done outdoors and away from houses or other structures. Keep the fryer in full view while the burner is on and turn the gas off if the oil begins to smoke. Completely thaw and dry the turkey before cooking to reduce excessive hot oil splatter. If a fire occurs, call 911 and do not attempt to extinguish the fire with water.

Enjoy outdoor activities and traveling with friends and family, but remember to properly plan your activities using individual risk management. With emphasis on traffic safety, we can work to make this a safe and happy holiday season.
