The 436th Aerial Port Squadron (A team) flag football squad found out what it's like to be perfect as it completed an undefeated season Nov. 30 by beating the 436th Maintenance Squadron 19 - 6 for the base intramural flag football championship title.

At the start of the game, the Maintainers kicked off to the Port. Both teams stood silent as they looked up, following the ball with their eyes and immediately charged toward each other, fighting for field position.

APS scored on their first possession, but MXS recovered by scoring on their second play with a 40-yard pass from James Goerss, MXS quarterback, to Justin Plummer, MXS wide receiver, and tied the game 6 - 6.

The Maintainer's coach shares his thoughts during the game.

"We know APS is a great team and their quarterback has a strong arm and he's accurate so we have to play better defense," said Joe Mageau, MXS coach. "The key for us to negate big plays is by keeping receivers in front of us."

Both teams tightened up and defense prevailed to keep the game deadlocked at 6 - 6 during the first half.

The Maintainers had the first possession of the second half, but were unable to gain a first down and were forced to punt to APS. The Port received a double penalty for holding and unsportsmanlike conduct and were moved back 20 yards.

Through the penalties, the APS coach remained confident that his team would win.

"Teamwork is the reason why we're undefeated," said Darius Perry, APS coach.

With less than four minutes until the end of the game, Goerss threw an interception while trying to force a play for his Maintainers. But APS scored on the ensuing possession making the final score 18 - 6.

This may have been a victorious day for APS winning the championship, but this was also a day the Maintainers wouldn't forget.

"I'm proud of our guys with the way we played, everyone fought hard and no one gave up," said Mageau. "We knew this was going to be a tough game coming in because APS is a good team and undefeated for a reason, but we'll regroup and be ready for them next year."
