Eighteen Team Dover Airmen competed in the Air Force Marathon held at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio Saturday.

Master Sgt. Kevin Murphy, 436th Mission Support Squadron was one of the 18 Airmen, who represented the Eagle and Liberty Wings and competed against 5,829 other registered runners.

This year was the 11th annual Air Force marathon and took place the same day Dover Airmen at home were celebrating the Air Force's 60th birthday at the Heritage to Horizons Ball at Dover Downs.

For the Dover Airmen, the marathon was a huge success, said Sergeant Murphy.

"This year's marathon was probably the best ever -- I've run eight of the Air Force Marathons," he said. "The weather was absolutely beautiful, low humidity and low temperatures."

Weather was not the only impressive element, according to the sergeant.

"The course was an improvement over previous years," he explained. "They had us run through 'officer's row' (housing area) and rerouted the course to run a couple more miles off of the base. This added some variety as it eliminated a very boring part of the old course and allowed the local community to cheer us on."

With an eighth Air Force Marathon under his belt, what's next for the sergeant?

"Next month I plan on running in the Marine Corps Marathon," he said. "Then, two weeks after that, I plan to run the Philadelphia Marathon. I hope to feel as good as I do for them as I did for this one."

How does an Airman physically recover after a marathon?

Sometimes, explained Sergeant Murphy, recovering from a marathon is a task in itself.

"I always try to keep moving as much as possible the days after the race," he said. "If you sit still, the pain intensifies and takes longer to subside.

"Getting back up and running again," is another key to recovery, he said.

"(Tuesday) morning, there were quite a few of us that ran the marathon that ran in the (Dover Air Force Base) Warrior Run," said the sergeant. "(Tuesday's) run was a bit of a slower pace than I would normally do, but overall it felt great."

In addition to Sergeant Murphy, 16 other Dover AFB Airmen competed in the marathon and one in a half marathon. Their times:
