On Aug. 15, 2021, De La Cruz was a Phoenix Raven aboard a C-17A Globemaster III noncombatant evacuation mission at Hamid Karzai International Airport, Kabul, Afghanistan, in support of Operation ALLIES REFUGE and was personally exposed to significant risk as the airfield's security perimeter breach placed him and the aircraft under constant threat of small arms fire and mobs of Afghan civilians desperate for escape.
