You won't find Ron Swanson or Leslie Knope, from the TV show "Parks and Recreation," in Team Dover's Outdoor Recreation, but you will find Chris Smith, 436th FSS Outdoor Recreation manager, and his dedicated employees.

The 436th Force Support Squadron's Outdoor Recreation has more to offer than just equipment rentals.

"Outdoor Rec provides just a wealth of opportunity," said Lt. Col. Donald Tasker, 436th FSS commander. "The entire FSS is here to build fit and resilient Airmen, military families and civilian teammates; everybody on Dover Air Force Base."

Smith wants newly arriving Airmen to know that Delaware and the surrounding area has much to offer in the form of recreation.

"A lot of people come here thinking that there's not much to do in Delaware," Smith said. "One of the biggest things we try to do is to introduce people to new things in this area in hopes that they will continue to go out on their own."

Examples of trips organized by Outdoor Rec include Mountain Biking at Fair Hill, Maryland, Hiking in White Clay Creek State Park in Newark, Delaware, Paintball at Skirmish, Pennsylvania, and Swamp Forest Trail Hike at Lums Pond State Park, Delaware. Future trips to look forward to include Kayaking, Boater Safety, Backpacking on the Appalachian Trail, and much, much more.

Besides these services, Outdoor Rec offers an indoor rock climbing wall. This wall is 26 feet tall with six climbing positions that vary in difficulty.

"It's used a lot," Smith said. "There has been a lot of demand to use the wall."

The climbing wall is free for active duty personnel and Department of Defense civilians when climbing in conjunction with an organized Squadron PT Program during normal operating hours. Advanced reservation is recommended. When not climbing in conjunction with an organized Squadron PT Program, the rate is $15 per hour for one to six people or $20 per hour for seven to 12 people.

The wall is also available for private functions and parties by reservation only.

"When you come away from Outdoor Rec using one of their products or facilities, you are more resilient and potentially more fit," Tasker said.
