The Capital City Rotary Club, in cooperation with the 436th Civil Engineer Squadron fire department, hosted the fourth annual Military Appreciation Day Picnic Oct. 12 at the fire department here.

The fire prevention-themed picnic allowed the local community to say thank you to Team Dover.

"The base is a part of us and we are a part of them," said David Shocik, Capital City Rotary Club member. "It is a pleasure to honor them and have these close connections to the people of the base. We have never lost our affinity for the base."

The picnic provided military families the opportunity to engage in several fun activities and learn helpful fire prevention techniques. Bounce houses, face-painting, mini-golf and corn hole were among the events offered.

"It's nice to come out to an event that brings our military community together especially giving the situation with the government shut down," said Mackenzie Mclain, who attended the picnic with her children. "I have three kids so it's always fun to get them out for a few hours to play with other kids."

In the past, the fire department held the fire prevention week open house separate from the Military Appreciation Picnic. The Rotary Club and Fire Department combined events this year to increase participation to both events.

"Working with the Rotary Club was effortless," said Staff Sgt. Chad Diehl, 436th Civil Engineer Squadron fire inspector. "Without the dedication and support of the Rotary Club the picnic wouldn't have been the success it was. I look forward to working with them again next year and hope that together we can improve this event even more."
