Hunting is a popular form of recreation in rural areas around the world. However, it's not without inherent risks; inexperienced hunters run the risk of injuring themselves or others with their weapons.

In response to this risk, the Hunter Safety Course, offered by the Outdoor Recreation Center, is available to Team Dover members as a free service. The course offers Team Dover members an opportunity to obtain their hunting license.

"All hunters born after 1978 are required to obtain a hunting license to legally hunt in Delaware," said Chris Smith, the manager of the Outdoor Recreation Center.

The course consists of two instructors from Dover AFB. It teaches lessons applicable to both novice and experienced hunters. Classroom instruction, live-fire training, show and tell, and peer-to-peer discussion are incorporated into the 16-hour course, which spans two weekends.

"The license is valid in 50 states and [several] countries," said Smith. "The material is useful for new and experienced hunters, who may have acquired bad habits without realizing it."

According to Smith, students learn safe-hunting techniques, firearm mechanics, muzzleloader and bow-hunting skills, hunting rules and etiquette, and wildlife conservation. The course is concluded with a live-fire exercise and a written test.

Historically, the students have had few issues passing the class. According to Smith, no Team Dover member has failed the course during his two-year tenure as instructor, despite the 80 percent score requirement for the written test.

"I cover the material well, and most of the students have a genuine interest in hunting, which helps motivate them to pass," said Smith.

Though every student might not take down a deer or turkey the day after they pass, they will learn the skills to do so safely.

"This is a refresher course for some," said Smith. "It's valuable experience for everyone."
