Following a motorcycle safety briefing in the base theater Aug. 21, participants of the 436th Maintenance Squadron motorcycle safety course relocated to the new Eagle's Nest training course for a demonstration from a member of the Dover Police motorcycle division.

This event was put together by Tech. Sgt. Brian Mace, 436th Maintenance Squadron Raptor Flight Flying Crew Chief scheduler, with the support of the 436th Airlift Wing Safety office. The goal was to present motorcycle safety in a different way than it had been in the past by including Tech. Sgt. Brian Allen, 512th Maintenance Squadron, who is also a patrolman first class of the Dover Police Department motorcycle division.

Sergeant Mace said "I thought bringing someone in who has seen the end results of being 'unsafe' could put things in better perspective."

Sergeant Mace has been riding for 5 years and is the Maintenance Squadron's motorcycle safety representative. He worked together with Kevin Greene, 436th Airlift Wing Safety, on this project.

Kevin Greene has almost 30 years of riding experience. He has taken four safety courses like this one and has also assisted in instructing the course.

Mr. Greene felt that Sergeant Allen was a well-qualified demonstrator. He said "PFC Allen has undergone advanced skills training that helps prepare them for the unexpected and unpredictable risks that they may face out on the road."

Mr. Greene knows that some people think they don't need safety training, but he says "I've seen many a person throughout my years as a safety professional that think 'I can do that' or 'I don't need that stupid training' and every time they were wrong."

The level of training received will determine how you react to, and handle, an adverse situation, said Mr. Greene, and Sergeant Allen is a very skilled instructor.

Sergeant Mace felt that the demo was a good addition to the motorcycle safety course. He hopes to take this idea and expand it to more than just the maintainers.

"The riding demonstration after the briefing was very entertaining, and I hope we can set something else up like this for the base motorcycle day next year." he said.
