Winter Safety Tips Published Jan. 15, 2019 By Master Sgt. Dwayne Jackson 436th Civil Engineering Squadron DOVER AIR FORCE BASE, Del. -- Snow has arrived here at Dover Air Force Base. Dover Fire and Emergency Services Flight would like to remind facility managers to keep the sidewalks and doorways free of ice and snow during the season. This will allow for safe evacuation of your personnel in case of a fire. Any buildup of ice and snow can delay our response to an emergency in your facility, and no one wants to slip and slide while getting away from a fire. Fire hydrants near your facility also need to be cleared of snow by at least three feet in circumference.Beware of space heaters, as these devices require a good amount of free space to be used without any fire hazards. Avoid placing heaters near any flammable or combustible materials. Always make sure your space heater has an automatic shut-off switch for both high heat and tip-over protection, and ensure they are plugged into the wall, not strip plugs or extension cords. The Dover AFB Fire Emergency organization wants to encourage everyone to continue fire safety measures. Evidence has shown us that fires happen whether we want them to or not, but with careful and attentive preparation, they can often be avoided. For additional information or questions, please don't hesitate to contact the Dover AFB Fire Prevention office at (302) 677-4401.
