Gimme Some Love! Published June 21, 2010 By Lt. Col Kevin Gordon 3rd Airlift Squadron commander DOVER AIR FORCE BASE, Del. -- Psst...hey you, yeah you, come here for a second. Get a little closer, want to hear a secret? I love my job. That's right, I said it, I love my job! And you know what else? I'm not ashamed of it. Now that it's off my chest, I'm willing to bet you love your job too. You want to know how I know? Don't worry, I can't peer into your thoughts. I know you love your job because I see it in your eyes, I see it in your actions and I definitely see it in your results every day around this great Air Force base. Okay, okay, so it's not really "cool" or "hip" to love your job but, guess what? You do, so get over yourself and just admit it already. What's not to love? You work at the best base in the Air Force (sorry Elmendorf, but I think we're better). You work with the best trained and most highly motivated Airmen and oh, by the way, you have a support network and job security that is the envy of the civilian sector. Bottom line, there is a lot to love about being in the Air Force. Sure there are some aspects of the job that may be difficult or challenging, but my experience has shown that with a positive attitude and a little extra effort, these challenges can be easily overcome. Then it's right back to all the terrific things you love about your job. Let's take some stock in some of the great things that happen all around you everyday. You enter the base greeted by professional security forces Airmen and civilians who ensure the bad guys stay outside the wire. Then you drive through the base with buildings and roads meticulously maintained by civil engineer wizards who, somehow, always make a fantastic base better. You might utilize one of the hundreds of things offered by an extremely diverse force support squadron or wing staff agency that solely exist to take care of you both on and off duty. If you aren't feeling well, you may be heading to the clinic where hundreds of professional medical personnel are on hand to provide world-class medical treatment to ensure you and your family are healthy enough to continue doing the job you love. What's that noise? That's the glorious sound of the C-5 and C-17 aircraft being dutifully maintained, operated and serviced by a maintenance group, operations group and aerial port team working in harmony to ensure critical airlift, so vitally important to our nation, is ready to go at a moments notice anywhere in the world! When you look at all the great things you do everyday, it's tough not to love what you do for your fellow Airmen, your unit, your base and your nation! Take a moment and reflect on all the vast things there are to love about your job and your contribution to the mission. Keep up the great work, stay focused and don't be afraid to tell someone that you love your job! I guarantee they'll know exactly what you are talking about.
