USNS Balboa (EMS 2) Naming Ceremony at Naval Medical Center San Diego

U.S. Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro hosted a ship naming ceremony for the future USNS Balboa (EMS 2) at Naval Medical Center San Diego on Oct. 27, 2023. Secretary Del Toro was joined by Commander, U.S. Third Fleet, Vice Adm. Michael Boyle, and Commander, Naval Medical Forces Pacific, Rear Adm. Guido F. Valdes, as guest speakers. The design for the Expeditionary Medical Ship (EMS) is a high-speed, dedicated medical ship optimized to Role-2 Enhanced medical care capabilities in support of Distributed Maritime Operations. The Bethesda-class EMS ships will have two surgical rooms equipped with 20 ICU beds, 40 medical-ward beds, and will stand ready to accommodate more than 60 patients at any given time.
