The Crucible is a 54-hour culminating event that requires recruits to work as a team and overcome challenges in order to earn the title United States Marine. Footage includes recruits of Echo Company, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion conducting body sparring, pugil sticks, a leadership reaction course, combat endurance training, patrolling, and navigating an obstacle course.

Michael Campofiori, from Brick Township, New Jersey, was diagnosed with Leukemia at age 11 and went through chemotherapy during his five-year battle with the cancer. When his cancer went into remission at age 16, he decided to pursue a career in the Marine Corps, but was rejected because of his medical history. After five years of repeated attempts, he was finally granted a waiver. He arrived at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, South Carolina on December 10, 2018 and is scheduled to graduate on March 8, 2019. (U.S. Marine Corps video by Staff Sgt. Bryan Nygaard)
