Pittsburgh District responds to disruptive flooding throughout region
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District
April 4, 2024 | 3:08
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District responded to region-wide flooding by closing down its locks for navigation on the rivers. The Point of Pittsburgh is under water, but the district's 16 flood-reduction reservoirs have kept approximately six feet of water from devastating the city even further. The Pittsburgh District prevented approximately $14.2 billion in flood damage from all the reservoirs and projects they have constructed over time.
The Pittsburgh District is working around the clock to manage reservoirs and dams to safeguard life and property. The district's dedicated lock crews will be working throughout the night and early morning to return navigation chambers back into operation as soon as the conditions are safe to do so.
The Ohio River at Dashields L/D is cresting at 26.8 feet on Thursday morning April 4. Navigation is suspended at a river stage of 23 feet.
