SAN DIEGO (Aug. 16, 2021) An immediate jaw reconstruction with 3D-printed teeth video project at Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD) Aug. 16. Using computer-aided design and 3D printing, NMCSD is one of the only centers in the United States to offer immediate jaw reconstruction with 3D-printed teeth. By leveraging technology, patients are able to have their tumor removed or traumatic defect reconstructed in one surgery using a transplanted lower leg bone. NMCSD was the first center in the Department of Defense and the state of California to perform this procedure utilizing 3D-printed teeth. In addition, NMCSD was the third center in the United States to complete the procedure for a patient with oral cancer. NMCSD’s mission is to prepare service members to deploy in support of operational forces, deliver high quality healthcare services and shape the future of military medicine through education, training and research. NMCSD employs more than 6,000 active duty military personnel, civilians, and contractors in Southern California to provide patients with world-class care anytime, anywhere.
