Interviews with SSBN Submariners: The Hardest Parts of Submarine Service
Naval History and Heritage Command
March 7, 2021 | 3:12
Active-duty and ballistic missile submariners explain why family separation is one of the hardest parts of their jobs. Patrol schedules mean submariners can miss birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, graduations — even the birth of a child or the death of a family member.

These interviews were conducted by the U.S. Naval Undersea Museum in 2016 for use in the museum’s new long-term exhibit “Preserving Peace: The Navy’s Strategic Deterrence Program.” The U.S. Naval Undersea Museum is one of ten official U.S. Navy museums within the Naval History and Heritage Command.
