Pilot lauded by Big Brothers Big Sisters of DE Published July 11, 2017 By Senior Airman Zachary Cacicia 436th Airlift Wing Public Affairs DOVER AIR FORCE BASE, Del. – Capt. Matthew Roy, 326th Airlift Squadron C-17 Globmeaster III pilot, was presented the 2017 Big Brother Hero Award, a Big Brothers Big Sisters of Delaware award, from Cub Scout Troop No. 5, May 23, 2017, in Harrington, Delaware. Roy has volunteered as a Big Brother for 10 year old Jay Plaisted with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Delaware since June 2016. Roy was nominated for this award by his Little Brother Jay via a hand-written letter. In the letter, Jay said “[Matt] deserves the BB/BS of the year award because Matt makes time for me. Matt takes me to the newest movies. He is also addicted to Pokémon Go as I am! We have fun walking and driving around playing it. We eat out and go for frozen yogurt after bowling and movies. Matt and I talk.” Jay is Lake Forest Elementary School student being raised by his grandmother. According to Onita Wells, BBBS of Delaware, Jay is a very kindhearted young man and has really good grades in school. However Jay’s grandmother enrolled him into the program so he could get help understanding how to balance a busy life and how to become more socially active in the community. She said that Jay enjoys having Captain Roy as a Big Brother and wanted to show his appreciation so he nominated him for the 2017 Hero Award through his Cub Scout Troop. Mentors are always needed. According to the organization, becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister to a child in your community, you will positively change that child’s life. Academic growth, increased self-confidence and an overall improved attitude towards school are just a handful of the positive impacts that a Big Brother or Big Sister can make in a child’s life.
