Dignified transfer

A dignified transfer is the process where, upon the return from the theater of operations to the U.S., a fallen military member is transferred from the aircraft to a waiting vehicle and then to the Air Force Mortuary Affairs Operations Center. The center staff is charged with fulfilling the nation's sacred commitment of ensuring dignity, honor and respect to the fallen and care, service and support to their families. Dignified Transfer

Prior to the dignified transfer, General Chandler and his wife, Eva-Marie, visited with the families of the fallen at the Center for the Families of the Fallen. The center was opened in January and dedicated to the care, service and support of families of the fallen, regardless of Service, while at Dover. Additionally, the center staff supports surviving Air Force family members around the world in any way needed, for as long as needed. The general's visit occurred during the Year of the Air Force Family, a year designated by the secretary of the Air Force and chief of staff of the Air Force, highlighting programs that take care of Airmen and their families.
