The familiar hamburger and gyro aroma was in the air. High-flying birds of war zoomed overhead to the thundering sound of patriotic music. Patrons found their way through static displays and a wide-array of vendors - this was the Dover Air Force Base Open House and Air Show. Despite a delay and rain out Saturday, there are high hopes for a successful show today.

Indeed gloomy weather was in the air, but the smiles of children's faces brightened the sky for many. There's no need to take our word for it, though. Read what some of the patrons had to say:

Rajuon Cox (with his sister, Anesha Gibson), Seaford residents - "This Air Show is awesome! I want to fly the KC-97 when I grow up. I know it is an old plane but it is really cool."

Andrea Duarte (with her boyfriend, Senior Airman Nick Chaloupka) - "This is my first Air Show. I've seen them on T.V. but never actually been to one. I can't wiit to see the Thunderbirds fly."

John Csady (with Matiste Wilson), retired Air Force colonel and Easton resident - "I came out here with Matiste Wilson to give him exposure to the Air Force. I think all branches of the service offer great opportunity to our young Americans and I just wanted Matiste to see what the Air Force is all about."

Francis Morrissey, Dover resident - "I came here for the fighters! I think the big jets and old jets are cool too, but I really want to see the [F/A-18] and Thunderbirds fly."

Jeff Wamlitz, New Jersey resident - "My boys and I have been to several Air Shows. We flew out to Nevada for one and have seen them up and down the East Coast. Still, though we've been to many, Dover has one of the best shows!"

Mike Cleary, New Jersey resident and former Marine - "I come here to visit my Air Force colonel friend [Col. John Csady, ret.] and to see these planes. I have always been fascinated by the Air Force and have the upmost respect for you all."
