Adam Gregory 436th AW Public Affairs DOVER AIR FORCE BASE, Del. -- More than 50 community leaders were welcomed into the Dover Air Force Base honorary commanders program during the 18th Annual Honorary Commanders Induction Ceremony at The Landings Club here Jan. 30. The Honorary Commanders Program first began at Dover in 1992, with 41 community leaders. To date, more than 700 community leaders have participated in the program. Civic leaders are matched with military commanders, both active duty and Reserve. Individuals are selected from across the peninsula with professions ranging from physicians and politicians to bankers, police officers, business owners and educators. The program is an opportunity for community members to partner with commanders to better understand each others programs and to support one another. Community members are educated about the base and the important role of today's military. Thomas Huff, President and CEO of Go-Glass Corporation, is a newcomer to the Honorary Commanders Program for 2009 for the 436th Civil Engineer Squadron. He has had many experiences abroad which have deepened his appreciation for being a citizen of the United States and is excited to be a part of the program. "Through cooperation and communication between our Dover AFB and Kent County communities we will create a more productive, enjoyable and prosperous area to live and work," said Mr. Huff. Military commanders invite their civilian counterparts to unit functions, including awards ceremonies, commander's calls, change of commands and social functions. Dean Blaha, North American Energy Services division director, is the new honorary commander for the 436th Airlift Wing vice commander. Mr. Blaha has been involved in the program before, previously serving with the 436th Maintenance Group. "The program is a great way to learn more about the Air Force and the people that make the base run," said Mr. Blaha. Kay Dietz-Sass, City of Dover public affairs coordinator, is the new honorary commander for the 3rd Airlift Squadron. She is looking forward to gaining a better understanding of Dover AFB. "I have been given a great opportunity to see first hand some of the things that are done at the base," said Mrs. Dietz-Sass. "I think it is important to continue relationships with those who I already know and to build relationships with new individuals." For the new and returning honorary commanders, the program will bring another year of building relationships and opportunities for the exchange of information between the military and civilian leaders.
