“Fit to Fight,” HAWC to find Dover’s fittest squadron Published April 27, 2007 By Airman Shen-Chia Chu 436th Airlift Wing Public Affairs DOVER AIR FORCE BASE, Del. -- The 436th Aeromedical Dental Squadron Health and Wellness Center is sponsoring a Squadron Fitness Contest in May. This event puts emphasis on promoting May as fitness month, said John Walters, HAWC exercise physiologist. "I want this to be a highly competitive competition," he said. "I would like to see 20 squadrons competing for the best of the best." Mr. Walter's goal is to find Team Dover's fittest squadron. The competition includes four categories that mirror the Air Force physical fitness test. The categories are pushups, sit-ups, waist measurement and a 1.5-mile run. To have a team competing, squadrons need a total of five people. The competition is co-ed and will not include a female or male only category. "I'm glad this opportunity came up because it encourages Airmen to shoot for a goal and helps in training," said Capt. Patrick Comiskey, 436th Contracting Squadron Operations Flight officer in charge. "It is a great way to promote fitness and camaraderie." When training for the contest, Mr. Walters advises the squadrons choose their fittest competitors. "You're only as strong as your weakest link," said Mr. Walters. "If there is one person in the group who is able to do well in everything except one category, they could bring down the overall score average for the team." It will not be scored by the usual Air Force fitness scoring standards. Mr. Walters will add up the individual scores in each category to create a combined team score. The highest score determines the winner. "The result of who wins isn't nearly as important as the benefits of becoming healthier and shaping up through this competition," said Captain Comiskey. A trophy will be awarded to Dover Team's fittest squadron in each category and for the overall best score. Trophies will be handed out at the end of the month during the first-place squadron's commander's call. The deadline to sign up is Monday. Those interested in signing up can email Mr. Walters at John.Walters2@dover.af.mil or call the HAWC at 677-3733.
