Governor signs House Bill 297
DOVER, Del. -- Servicemembers and their families gathered with Delaware officials at a ceremony for the signing of House Bill 297, the Compact for Education Transition for Military Children, at Dover High School Thursday. Delaware Governor Ruth Ann Minner signed the bill into law, making Delaware the tenth state to join the Compact, thus activating it and making educational transitions for active-duty military families easier amongst states participating in the Compact. Led by nearly 20 adult volunteer mentors, 35 Dover Team youth participated in the seven-day Drug Education for Youth, Phase 1 Leadership Camp at Chapel 2 at Dover Air Force Base, June 18 – 26. The children, ages 9 – 12, participated in two Presidential Fitness Challenges, workshops, academic studies, a field trip to the City of Dover Police Station and the base control tower and a flightline tour of a C-5 Galaxy. During Phase II, adult mentors stay involved in the lives of the children in their mentorship groups for an entire year – from checking in on schoolwork and grades, to phone calls and activities.
