Environmental cleanup; AF joins forces with fed and state agencies to clean groundwater around Dover AFB

Scott Pitz (right), a field geologist from URS Corporation is overseeing Aaron Eichelberger (left), lead driller, and Jeffery Rausa (middle), a driller helper, both from SGS Environmental Services, Inc. as they install a 20-foot stainless steel well screen. SGS Environmental Services, Inc. is a subcontractor for URS Corp. The cleanup effort is removing chlorinated solvents, which were disposed of in the ground when the base first began operations, according to Charles Mikula, 436th Civil Engineer Squadron environmental flight chief. This is not a concern for public health since no one drinks the water, he said. (U.S. Air Force photo/Roland Balik)
