School implements student saving program Published Nov. 22, 2010 DOVER AIR FORCE BASE, Del. -- Dover Air Force Base Middle School has partnered with Wilmington Trust Bank and the University of Delaware Center for Economic Education and Entrepreneurship to implement a Bank at School Program for students. The Delaware Bank at School program creates partnerships between banks and schools to provide students with an opportunity to open savings accounts for free and to deposit money weekly. The program also provides lessons correlating with the Delaware State Standards in Economics. These lessons allow teachers to introduce relevant and timely money and banking concepts in order to meet the financial literacy needs of the students. Dover AFB Middle School faculty said they are excited about the opportunity to teach their students about personal financial management and to help them learn to save. "We feel this is an excellent opportunity for students to begin saving now," said Jessilene Corbett, DAFB Middle School principal. "This is a good opportunity for them to think about their future, to think about saving for what they want later. Our faculty is open and receptive to starting this program, and we are the second school in the lower Delaware region to have one." A Wilmington Trust banker will be at the school once a week to answer students' questions and help them make deposits. Students need a deposit of one dollar to open a free savings account. Students will learn good saving practices, interest growth of money left in the bank, how to fill out a deposit ticket, complete paperwork to open an account and more.
