Team Dover will see a change in their email starting April 29.

Active Directory and Exchange is part of an ongoing effort to transform cyber operations and create a central Air Force Network. All Major Commands own and operate individual networks and e-mail services, and have help desks located at every installation. By consolidating these networks and centralizing service, the Air Force can significantly increase the level of service it provides its Airmen, while at the same time reducing operational costs.

"Dover will be the second Air Mobility Command base to migrate into the AFNet," said Robert Baird, 436th Communications Squadron Network Operations chief. "It will take about six weeks to complete, user impact will be minimal and in most cases transparent during the migration. The first step in this effort is to give everyone an e-mail address with a universal format."

The new addresses will not be base specific, such as @dover.af.mil, but will have the extension of @us.af.mil. This means that every Air Force user - Active Duty, Guard, Reserve, civilian or contractor -- will keep that address for as long as they're associated with the Air Force.

"Another change will be around the clock access to e-mail and network services," said Mr. Baird. "Through the use of a Common Access Card (CAC) and static e-mail account, Airmen who are TDY, Deployed or in PCS status can communicate and manage personal information through any AF CAC enabled computer."

Migration into the AFNet also eliminates the past practice of deactivating and creating accounts, with the goal of making Airmen more productive and effective.

"In preparation for the migration, we encourage Airmen to reduce the size of their mailboxes by deleting unnecessary files and moving others to personal folders," said Mr. Baird. "Anyone with questions should call the Communications Focal Point at 677-237."

As Dover approaches its start date, a team of Air Force Network Integration Center, 690th Network Support Group, and 436th CS technicians are busy preparing equipment and resources to facilitate the migration of almost 7500 users.
