Lights, mikes and diverse songs are being arranged for Dover's Air Mobility Command Icon base-level contest scheduled for Aug. 19 at The Landings Club.

The event is to showcase singers who are competing for a chance at a claim to fame - to be able to represent their base at the AMC Icon competition at Scott AFB, Ill.

The winner of Dover AMC Icon will go on to compete at the command level against representatives from the other AMC bases.

Senior Airman Naomi Scott, 436th Maintenance Squadron, took second place in the command level of the 2008 competition. At the time she was Airman 1st Class Naomi Nadeau.

"I never imagined doing this in the Air Force," said Airman Nadeau, after winning Dover's AMC Icon. "This was an exciting experience and I had a lot of fun. I say if you're not having fun, then it's not worth doing."

The event offers talented vocalists an opportunity to demonstrate their abilities to a captive audience.

"It's a wonderful opportunity for our Airman to come out and show their talent," said Frank Russo, 436th Force Support Squadron Community Center director. "The Community Center's role is to feature our Airmen with their talents - to show they are more than guardians of peace."

Last year's contestants have said they are up for the challenge. But not all the contestants are looking for victory alone.

"When I sing, I sing from my heart," said Airman 1st Class Shen-Chia Chu, 436th Airlift Wing Public Affairs. "I'm not in this competition to win anything, it's just exciting for me to be able to express how I feel through music and share the music I love with others."

Singers will perform a song of their choice and a panel of three judges will rate the singers based on intonation, tone quality, style, showmanship and more. Dover's AMC Icon is open to the public and will start at 6 p.m. Aug. 19.
