Q: What can be done to get drivers to stop for people in the cross walks? I have witnessed drivers that ignore the people crossing or waiting to cross at designated cross walks. This is dangerous and needs to be brought to the attention of the Security Forces Squadrons. Can we call the Security Forces to report driver's who don't stop?

A: I agree, this is very dangerous. As members of Team Dover we need to look out for each other, not just while engaged in deployed locations, but here at home station as well. The Traffic Safety Working Group has also identified crosswalk safety as a concern, and that is why we are installing in-pavement warning lights at three crosswalks along Atlantic Avenue, using some of the Installation Excellence Award money. These bright yellow, solar-powered lights will alert drivers that pedestrians are in, or about to enter, the crosswalk. These lights will be installed at the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and Liberty Way, at the crosswalk on Atlantic Avenue by Building 719 and the North Gate where a walking/jogging trail currently being constructed will cross Atlantic Avenue. These improvements are scheduled to be completed by the end of 2008. If these improvements are successful, then we'll install additional crosswalk lighting as funding becomes available.
