With summer fast approaching, flies, mosquitoes, ticks, chiggers and various other biting insects become more prevalent and do what they do best; bug us.

"Nicer weather usually entices more outdoor recreational activities. Applying a few simple steps before heading out can go a long way in keeping everyone safe", said Tech. Sgt Mathew Pace, Pest Management Noncommissioned Officer in Charge.

Whether its lawn work, hiking, or beach trips, it is important to understand how to best protect the base and our families from insects and other pests coming out of winter hibernation from bites, diseases, and home intrusion.

"While not all biting insects carry a virus or disease, they can all be very irritating and often painful", said Staff Sgt. Amber Palmer-Crews, Pest Management Technician.

A few simple steps towards protecting ourselves can help prevent these maladies. Above all, insect repellant is the most effective way of warding off biting insects.

Proper clothing will also create a defense for exposed skin. For example, long pants that cover ankles and long sleeve shirts in high grass or wooded areas will help prevent pests from latching on to your skin before you see them.

"Being aware of your surroundings can also prevent any unwanted contact with spiders, snakes, and other pests that like to hide during the day", said Airman 1st Class John Wilt, Pest Management Apprentice.

These pests are known to hide in dark holes and crevices for shelter. The 436th Civil Engineer Squadron Pest Management shop recommends checking workspaces, playgrounds, and homes for animals looking for a cool, safe haven from the elements. It is important to respect their homes and safe havens from the elements as the days get hotter to avoid any unpleasant interactions.

The Pest Management shop has an ongoing Self-Help program to help prevent pest intrusion. The program is designed to give base personnel options to eliminate pest problems themselves.
"Under the Self-Help program, building occupants can receive chemicals, traps, and other tools to treat their pest problem for thirty days", said Pace.

The Self-Help store can provide several methods to treat different pests ranging from ants, bees, cockroaches, flies, mice, rats, and weeds. For questions regarding pest control and the Self-Help program, please contact the Pest Management shop at 677-6151.

For Eagle Heights residents, overall interior and exterior cleanliness is the best deterrent against pests. Storing food in sealed plastic or glass containers will reduce the urge for pests to enter homes. Maintaining a clutter-free exterior will reduce possible hideouts and breeding grounds for animals and insects.

Mosquitoes and other wildlife feel welcome if standing water is prevalent so it is important to reduce any possibility of water accumulation. Also, a good way to prevent ant invasions is to identify and fill cracks or crevices in the kitchen with caulking.
