Granada Urgent Fury - 25 OCT 1983
On 25 October 1983, U.S. forces invaded the Caribbean island of Grenada in order to restore order following a military coup, and to protect the lives of American students on the island.
Medical units in Grenada included detachments assigned to the 82d Airborne Division (307th Medical Battalion), and to the 1st and 2d Ranger Battalions. The 57th Medical Detachment flew air evacuation missions. Later, medical support was provided by the 44th Medical Brigade and by Medical Task Force 5, which was composed of personnel from the 5th Surgical Hospital. Aside from treating the 116 wounded American service members, medical personnel performed preventative medicine functions, provided detainee medical care, and conducted medical clinics for the local population.
